NOTICE OF RACE - COWES - DINARD - July 8th, 2017

INTRODUCTION TO THE REAL RACE

This race is organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in association with the UNCL, the Dinard Yacht Club, the Société Nautique de la Baie de St Malo, the
Junior Offshore Group (JOG) and the Royal Yacht Squadron .

In 1905, the King of England, Edward the VIIth, gifts a red gold cup to the winner of a sailboat race for boats of 30 tons and more. The first edition took place in 1906 - with 4 boats registered, 2 on the start line and ... one at the finish line, La Barda belonging to Charles Ledoux, after 84 hours.

The race organization was stopped by the First World War and started again in 1930. Once again interrupted by the Second World War, it resumed in 1945 - 9 brave teams dared racing in the middle of the still active minefields.

In the early 1950s, the french Groupe des Croiseurs Légers ( Light Cruisers Group ) and the JOG ( Junior Offshore Group ) got Cowes Dinard in their championship. In 1960 120 boats were on the starting line. They will be only 18 on the finish line !

From 1975 onwards, the race is used as training for the Admiral's Cup and proves to be an important race. There will be more than 250 boats participating in the 1980s.

It is still today attracting big names of the sailboat racing community, as well as hundreds of amateurs. For them it is one of the mythical races you have to do at least once in your life...


NOTICE OF RACE

1. ORGANIZATION

1.1 The race is organized by Corsaire31 for ( and with help of ) the French-speaking Sailaway Community ( Sailaway Communauté Francophone)

1.2 The race will use the "Sailaway The Sailing Simulation" software by Orb Creation studios.

1.3 All communications will go through the community's Discord at :https://discord.gg/MQ7bcGB

1.4 The Discord room #course will be used to validate checkpoints.

1.5 The Discord #general room will be used for all other talks in or out of the race.

1.7 You can register by email to the Race Committee or directly on the Discord channel - room #inscription course


2. RACE REGULATIONS

2.1  Between 20 and 27 hours , 2 mandatory waypoints (check zones) to validate.

You will need to validate ( or have another skipper validate for you ) eash check zone and of course the finish line. This is to control you passed all the marks according to the instructions and so we can make a partial ranking at each mark.

2.2 Failure to validate a check zone will lead to a 5 h penalty.

2.3 Thanks in advance for not sending all validations at once after the race, but at each check zone.

2.4 Mandatory check zones will be validated through two possibilities :

*  You are online at the time you go through the check zone

You make a screenshot with the map page on screen and paste it in the #course room in Discord

You make a screenshot with the GPS page on screen and paste it in the #course room in Discord

The start is validated automatically as a group

You write as a commentary to the screenshots the skippers name and the name/number of the boat. Same applies if you also validate another nearby boat.

It is possible to have your validation done by another nearby boat. Better ask him before !


* You are offline at the time you go through the check zone :

Put a waypoint inside the green check zone in order to receive an e-mail from Sailaway.

Think about possible drifting and don't put the waypoint directly on the mark if there is one.

Send a copy of this e-mail to the Race Committee with following information : name of waypoint/check zone , boat number/name, skipper's name. Don't send any attachment.

2.5 Rules of conduct at sea

Sailaway today doesn't handle collisions with boats, but handles now wind shadows.  You will be asked to avoid collisions with other boats and to follow the ISAF rules for navigation.

The rules to be followed at start and during the race  are specially n° 1 to 6 of this tutorial :

These rules shall not apply between the times of local sunset and sunrise, and shall be replaced with the IRPCAS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea).


3. ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION

3.1 This race is opened to Mini Transat and Sailaway Cruiser 38 sailboats.

3.2 It is open to anyone owning Sailaway, registered on our forum and/or on our Discord channel.

3.3 End of registrations on Friday July 7th at midnight UTC

3.4 The list of registered skippers at any time can be seen hereunder.


4. SCHEDULE

Friday July 7th midnight UTC : closure of registrations

Saturday July 8th :

Pre race briefing 12:00 UTC  - 14:00 CEST
Attention signal ( no more teleportation ) : 12:50 UTC  -  14:50 CEST
Start at  13:00 UTC  -  15:00 CEST ( Signals 5 mns and 1 mn before start )

** Individual recall for early start : the recalled boat (or boats) will have to turn around and go through the start line again after going around one of its ends.

7. RANKING

We will follow up hereunder the ranking at each mandatory waypoint, according to validations received.


8. COMMUNICATIONS - TRACKING

According to situations :

* By e-mail :  through reading of received mails at crhorse [Arobase] gmx.de
* By Discord in the #course room following map and GPS screenshots received from skippers
* On the Sailaway map.

Vocal and chat communications through the group's Discord channel
#general room for all communication outside validations of check zones
#course room for validation of checkpoints, DNF or notification of penalties.


9. PROTESTS

Any skipper will be allowed to send a protest to the Race Committee through a PM on the forum or by email, at latest 48 hours after the closure of the finish line ( last skipper arrived )

The Race Committee will be charged with assembling a jury of 3 members among the group's administrators. This jury will have one week to look at this protest and give its verdict with a majority.  This verdict is indisputable and will be transmitted to the skipper by the Race Committee.

As head of the Race Committee, Corsaire31 will not be allowed to be a member of the jury.

* After review ( picture and video ) of arrival, the Race Committee decides to award same time to both skippers. Nomad crossed the finish line a couple of meters ahead, but use of auto sail gave him the advantage of instant sail swap between gennaker and code 0.

** Estimated time, the validation picture received shows the boat moored well past the finish line and not at the time of crossing the finish line.

According to the Notice of Race part 9, every skipper has the right to send a protest to the Race Committee until Wednesday July 12th at 15:15 UTC. This protest will be reviewed in accordance with Part 9 of the Notice of Race.

If no protest has been received by that time, the present Line Honours Ranking will be considered the official one.

Hello,

I am pleasantly surprised by my second place related to Nomad. Especially for the reason given, whereas the regulation did not prohibit this use.
I would like to see if it is possible to give me the third place and not the second. Nomad did a great job as a sports journalist throughout the race. Therefore, a lack of attention most of the time on the adjustments to be fine-tuned. I think he did not steal that second place.
